Your child will build vocabulary, literacy, and writing skills while writing beautiful poetry.

In this 10-week online after school class, students will read a variety of poems, explore and discuss poetic language, and write their own poems.

This after school class is for kids who:

  • want to have fun with poetry

  • like creative writing

  • enjoy playing with words

  • don't know a lot about poetry but want to learn more

  • are looking for a fun, interactive online community

Poetry is a fun way for children to express their ideas and build confidence. It helps children understand themselves and others while cultivating valuable qualities like compassion and empathy. Learning poetry builds writing skills like rhyming, alliteration, metaphor and word choice.

In this online class, your child will learn about poetic styles and language, reflect on how poems make us feel, and write poems.

If your kids love poetry this class is for them. If they don't like poetry, this class may just change their minds!

During this 10-week course, we will discuss:

  1. Alliteration

  2. Allusion

  3. Figurative Language

  4. Hyperbole

  5. Imagery

  6. Metaphor

  7. Onomatopoeia

  8. Personification

  9. Rhyme Scheme

  10. Simile

During each class, students will be introduced to playful, interesting, and diverse poems. We will read and reread the poems then discuss our reactions. They will craft their own poems and in a supportive environment and, if they want, they will share their poetry with the group. All students will be gently encouraged to participate.
